The Australian and Queensland Governments yesterday released the 2014 State Party Report on the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area which highlights the significant progress being made to improve the management, health and protection of this amazing iconic area.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has approved a proposal to dump dredge spoil from the Abbot Point coal terminal expansion in the Marine Park area.

Three million cubic metres of spoil must be dredged as part of the project at Bowen in North Queensland green-lighted by Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt last month. Read more

By the end of this week we will know whether the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority will allow dredge spoil from the Abbot Point port redevelopment to be dumped within the park’s boundaries.

The port expansion, which was approved by federal environment minister Greg Hunt in December, will generate three million cubic metres of spoil – weighing some five million tonnes. Read more

Scientists have gained new insight into the damage done to coral in The Southern Great Barrier Reef by river run-off caused by intense weather events like the 2011 floods.

Core samples obtained from corals around the Keppel Islands reveals the way flood plumes from Queensland's Fitzroy River catchment have impacted reefs as far as 50km from the mouth of the river. Read More

Ships passing through the Great Barrier Reef could disrupt whales' ability to call out to one another, a study has found.

Researchers from James Cook University used a large underwater microphone to record noises at a reef off Townsville for three months last year.

Professor Colin Simpfendorf, who recently analysed the recordings, said three main sounds could be heard. Read more
