Hazard assessment for water quality threats to Torres Strait marine waters, ecosystems and public health

Project 4.4

Project Leader: Jon Brodie - JCU

In 2011, the project commenced scoping of existing local scale pollutant sources in the Torres Strait region (e.g. sewage discharge, stormwater, mines (disused) and existing and planned large scale pollutant sources (PNG and West Papua primarily) and will work with TSRA in 2012 to identify and document key pollutant sources. The project’s Professor Eric Wolanski has started development of a hydrodynamic model (using the SLIM platform) for the region that can model transport of water-bourne material. The initial field visit to the TS will occur on the 23 and 24th February by Jon Brodie and Jane Waterhouse. Dr. Alana Grech from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University and Will Higham from the Reef Catchments NRM group have joined the project as associate researchers. Ultimately, the project will assess water quality threats to the region and make recommendations on a basic water quality monitoring program which will be able to be used to report on the status of water quality in the Torres Strait and assess the success of pollution management interventions.
